Review of New York Burger @ Irrawaddi Road, Penang

For those in the know, behind the busy road of Burma Road and all, there is an enclave of shops that is slowly becoming a haven for some good food. Today got the opportunity to try out New York Burger which is located along Jalan Irrawaddi and just a couple of shops away from Harvest Inn. Its not a very big place currently but I guess you don't need all nice big tables since the items which they serve is as their name suggest is mainly on Burgers as well as some Pizza and Pasta!
I kinda enjoyed the design and setup of the place. It reminds me of those diners which you see so often in Hollywood movies! Even the tables and lamp design, are so American. But anyway, this place is famous for the charcoal burgers, and surprise surprise, there was even a charcoal pizza! Yeap, I was skeptical but actually it was very well made and tasty. Thus, check out the pictures below and maybe give it a try.

Its Burger Time!
The shop has 2 stories but currently only the lower floor is used!

Lou Malnati's ~ Deep Dish Pizza from Chicago

Its nice to have buddies in places that you visit and Bill was nice enough to bring me to sample one of the legends of Chicago food which is the deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati's! Well, I would guess this is really some famous as even my sister asked if I tried it, and I'm very very glad I did. Besides not having been to Italy, I find that the pizzas in the USA overall are really good and way way better than any fast food or pizza joints available locally in Penang.
So apparently Lou's started way back in Chicago and actually now have quite a number of outlets spread out across the state. They even do mail orders if you are in the USA and I was really tempted to see if they will ship it to Penang, but they mentioned its USA only :( Bummer.
Anyway, so what is so different with a deep dish than a normal pizza? Well, for starters, the deep dish is over 1 inch thick, so imagine your normal pizza toppings being really thick, almost lasagna thick. This is thus what a deep dish is. A very thick pizza!
I was told the original filling is cheese with spinach but we ordered a custom one with lots of sausage and bell peppers and of course loads of cheese! It was a 12 inch pizza just nice for 2 person, but can you imagine, I actually managed to eat half of this monster with Bill devouring the rest! Not bad for 2 person, I don't imagine me able to chow down the bigger one though.
The pizza was very flavorful and I find the crust to be pretty edible too. Not overly hard. Also the filling was just delicious and as I write this, the hunger pangs is making me drool over this now! Anyway, if you are in Chicago and have a love for pizzas, don't pass up the offer to try this!
A note, the place was packed by 6pm, and its a good thing we reach just before the crowd as it takes awhile to bake this monster! Comments welcomed as always.

 Oh my, what a beauty
The exterior of the building. This one is a historic building and supposedly over 50 years old, or was that 100?

New York Pizza in Sungai Dua, Penang

There are more and more pizza places that are coming up to rival those from the mainstream such as Pizza Hut or Domino's and New York Pizza is one such startup that seeks to give diners a higher quality pizza at a better value. New York Pizza is currently located in Sg Dua and for those that knows where Infinity Cyber Cafe is will definitely notice this pizza place located on the same row of shops.
The owner of the place seeks to make pizzas which are a step above what is commercially available and each pizza here is hand made to order and they make some pretty impressive thin crust pizzas. Besides pizza's, they are also starting to promote their charcoal bun burger which is again, self made! Do read on to find out more about them.

Food of Guangzhou, China 2012

During my recent trip to Guangzhou, even though I did not get lots of great food but I still had some. This post is dedicated to all the meals which I had in the factory office. Because the location of the factory is quite far from shops, thus everyday, they will order meals and have it delivered to the office. I was surprise by the quality thus it was not too bad, until you start eating the same items for lunch and dinner for a whole week!
But anyway, do have a look of my "office meals"!

Kwong Sang House, Penang

Its never ending the many lovely places to hangout and dine in Penang. Really salute all these creative and happening people for providing us with all their hardwork. So today, from the creators of Behind 50 (which I have wrote about before here and here), they have now started another semi concept cafe/restaurant, this time at Leith Street. It happens that the building in which the cafe now stands used to be a tailors shop and thus, they have adopted this as their concept, a place to chill out and dine at a toilors shop! How interesting ya. My wife, Apple, already has plans to get all her patchwork friends over pretty soon as this place just makes them feel at home. So my family and I decided to give them a try on only their first week of opening, and we were overall pretty happy with the place. Read on to read and see more of this place.

Location : 36, Leith Street,, 10220 Penang, Malaysia
Operating hours : 12noon - 11pm (close on Thursdays)

Kafe Soul Kitchen Trattoria ~ not to be miss

I have been to Soul Kitchen for so many times but have always missed out on writing more about this place. I have recommended this place to so many people that I guess I must take some time to finally pen it down. This place is started by Tonio and Michele since mid of 2010 and I guess their popularity has only continued to increase over time. Tonio is from Germany and Michele, KL, and they have decided to bring a little bit of their love and start Soul Kitchen. As you enter this place, or decide to sit outside, I guess you will feel at ease and relax, as they are one of the friendliest of people.
You can just bum around, order some drinks, or if you are hungry, grab some of their very good food. What I like about this place is that almost everything here is self made or of their secret recipe :) And you can see alot of effort goes into preparing it with fine details on every dish served.
On this night, I was there with my family and since we stop by after dinner, we just had their fruit yogurt, a slice of moist chocolate cake and a cup of Latte (coffee with milk). But I did get to take some additional pictures of some of their all time favorite food. But my main goal was not within my grasp tonight, which is their infamous Tiramisu. All I can say is that, in all my many experience eating Tiramisu, I think this is the place that makes it the best. Other than the one which I wrote about while in Copenhagen, Soul Kitchen without a doubt is a place to go to experience what a good Tiramisu is to be. But do be prepared to go early, or it might be sold out, as is the case for me tonight. But I will be back for sure! And then I will write again on it. Enjoy the below ya.

Kafe Soul Kitchen Trattoria

10200, Penang Malaysia
Opens daily from 10.00am-2.30pm and 6.30pm-9.00pm

This is how Soul Kitchen looks like at night. Don't think there are many pictures of this place at night so here it is.
The fruitty yogurt. Lots of fresh fruits and their home made yogurt. My daughter loved it. So does my wife.
Some other guest there ordered their mushroom pizza. Doesn't it just looks yummy with the very generous helping of mushrooms and cheese? Also the thin crust makes this even better to have.
