Zi Wei Yuan Steamboat Restaurant, Raja Uda, Butterworth

Being a fan of Steamboat, I'm glad to know that those in Penang are pretty decent but there is one that is very popular which is located at Raja Uda, near to the 9 Emperor Temple along Jalan Raja Uda. The place is called Zi Wei Yuan Steamboat Restaurant and its easily spotted as its right along the main road. I'll post the GPS coordinates below.
So what's so special about this place? Well, for a start, their steamboat is that of a fish and yam stock and this is what gets customers coming back for more. They also uses charcoal for the heat and its pretty cool when you see their portable mini fan firing up the heat!
So, the way to  order here is that there are 2 ways to do so. Its either ala carte or one can choose from the many set items. So it really depends on you liking and budget. The prices are pretty decent and won't cost you a bomb as long as you don't order something super expensive like abalone.
What I like about this steamboat is that the soup base is very tasty and when you throw in the fried yam and fish meat, the soup base really comes together in the end to make it a great tasting pot of soup. You can then either have it with rice or noodles and you will not be disappointed. I mean, so many people going there can't all be wrong right? So, those that have been there too, do feedback how was your experience! Cheers.

Tom Yam Noodle & Porridge @ Restoran Joo Heng ~ Raja Uda

When I was driving along Jalan Raja Uda last Friday night with my food buddies, suddenly a crowded restaurant caught my eye. So without a second thought, I made a U-turn and headed to Restoran Joo Heng. We had no idea what they were serving but as we got closer, it looked like it was a buffet. But on closer inspection, there is this stall at this coffee shop which is cooking up a Tom Yam storm. What impressed me immediately was that one can choose what they want to include in their noodle or porridge. You are given a small plate, and then you will go about choosing your own condiments.
The variety of items to choose is really good. There is various meat such as minced pork, pork intestines, pork kidney/liver, fish belly meat, fish head, a good variety of mushrooms such as shitake, oyster and straw, various fish balls, various vegetables, and their signature item, fried crispy fish fillets.
So after selecting what we want included, then its time to choose how we want it cooked. They have Tom Yam mee, bihun, porridge and also a non spicy broth to choose from. As we are a big fan of Tom Yam, we headed for the Tom Yam noodle. When it came, we were surprise to see that the broth was pretty clear, with some chilli flakes clearly visible. But what struck us was the taste. It was sour, not too spicy, but it had a kick. I LOVE it immediately. As we selected our own condiments, there is no worry that we won't like what we are having. I really love this idea of theirs. We hurriedly devoured the bowl of noodles and then the owner told us about Tom Yam porridge.
This is the first time I heard of this and I made a note that I will return the next day just to sample the Tom Yam porridge. So again, I chose what I wanted, and asked for the Tom Yam porridge. I have to say, on the first spoonful, I was convinced that I will be returning many more times for this. The porridge blended so well with the spicy broth that I feel its better than with the noodles. This is surely something for Tom Yam lovers to try if they haven't already done so :) And then, to add on, their fried fish fillets are really delicious. They will fry it in a huge wok and you can clearly see that its a crowd favorite. When I asked, the owners told me that they used dory fish, but whatever marination that they have done, they surely have done an excellent job at making it feel as if we are eating much better fish.
I highly recommend this place and for those who have tried, do leave your thoughts too ya.

Butterworth Curry Noodles House - The "Keh Liao" Curry place

Well, I used to hear about this curry noodle stall in Raja Uda alot, where it only opens at night and is located by the road side. Many years ago, I have passed by this stall but never got the chance to try it as its not very convenient to park.
So recently, I was asked to try out this Curry Noodles and thus, on a Saturday night with my buddy, we decided to head to Jalan Raja Uda. At first we were abit disappointed as we can't see the stall anymore and I was worried that it has closed down till I saw a shop with the words Curry Noodles House located about 100m away. Thus, try my luck and went to ask the person at the counter and they confirmed that they are the same stall. Yippee! Found it at last.
As thus, here we have the curry noodles that is so famous, the shop is packed to the brim, people sit at all tables inside and out. Best part, it was already 10pm and its still fully pack! Wow.
We ordered the standard bowl of noodles and it was a not too bad curry noodle. It comes with the standard to fu pok, cockles, coagulated pigs blood, some bits of long beans and bean sprouts. The first thing I did was to try the soup. It was not too bad, it has curry taste but I feel that its lacking some oomph. Now that I think about it, wonder is it that they didn't give any sambal? Hmm? But what I think will make this curry noodle a killer and what attracts the crowd are when you have those add ons, which when mixed with the curry noodle, will further enhance the tastes.
Among the most popular of their add ons has to be the Lala. Practically every table has a plate of it and when I saw it, it really does look very good. The Lala were of big size and not like those tiny morsels normally seen. The sauce looks spicy and appetizing too. Then they also have other add ons like fried chicken, curry pork, sambal sotong and even fried balitong.
Well, its surely worth a try to visit this place while in Butterworth Raja Uda area.
Do leave your comments ya
